Hey, what’s up, I’m Ashley Poplin. My husband, Alex, and I decided we were tired of living in the societal matrix. We quit our jobs and moved to our dream location in the beautiful mountains of North Georgia. Now, we pursue knowledge and excellence in everything we do. Character Creation and Development:
First and Foremost, we are critters, and we love the show. When “Critical Role” emerged, we started looking into vo work. We loved the actors for a long time, so using the game to enhance a possible career was exciting.
We played around with D&D before looking into vo work to get started. A Lot of time went into playing & learning.
We found that in the character development, we explored different voices and honed in on the craft. It’s an excellent vocal practice. Even better practice if you DM, but we’ll stay focused on players for this post.
D&D offers a rich tapestry of diverse and engaging characters. When playing the game, voice actors have the opportunity to embody these characters, bringing their personalities, quirks, and voices to life.
By creating and developing unique character voices for your D&D campaigns, you can exercise your range, experiment with accents, and explore different vocal techniques. This process enhances your ability to adapt and portray various characters in voice-over work.
Improvisation and Quick Thinking:
Voice acting often requires thinking on your feet and delivering compelling performances in real time. It is, at its core – acting. D&D is renowned for its improvisational nature, as players must react and respond to unexpected situations.
Practicing improvisation during D&D sessions helps voice actors sharpen their ability to think quickly, adapt to unexpected scenarios, and deliver convincing performances on the spot. This skill is invaluable in voice over work, where spontaneity and flexibility are key.
Narrative Reading and Storytelling:
D&D campaigns are built around intricate and immersive narratives. As a voice actor, participating in D&D sessions allows you to engage in interactive storytelling, where you can practice reading aloud with expression, pacing, and emphasis.
By immersing yourself in the narrative and bringing it to life through your voice, you develop the ability to captivate an audience and evoke emotions through your storytelling prowess—a fundamental skill in voice acting.
Collaborative Role-Playing:
D&D is a collaborative game that requires teamwork and communication. Engaging in role-playing scenarios with other players challenges voice actors to interact, engage, and respond authentically to their fellow players’ characters and voices.
It helps us communicate and work through what vision is in our minds we may need to express more effectively to each other.
This dynamic fosters the development of active listening skills, adaptability, and the ability to play off other performers—a vital aspect of voice acting when working in ensemble casts or recording dialogue for animated projects.
Flexibility in Vocal Range and Expressions:
D&D offers various characters, each with unique traits and qualities. Voice actors can use D&D sessions to explore and expand their vocal range, experimenting with different tones, pitches, accents, and characterizations.
By pushing the boundaries of their vocal capabilities and embodying a diverse cast of characters, voice actors can enhance their versatility and ability to deliver captivating performances in the voice over industry.
Creating Voice Reels and Demo Material:
D&D sessions can serve as an opportunity to record and gather material for voice acting demos and reels. By documenting your performances during gameplay, you can compile a collection of character voices, accents, and narrative readings that showcase your abilities. These recordings can be valuable additions to your portfolio and demonstrate your skills and range to potential clients and casting directors.
However, we use a different method than this. We record in our booth and use our D&D sessions just as practice. But, do what’s best for you!
Wrap Up:
Dungeons & Dragons provides a creative and immersive platform for voice actors to practice and refine their craft.
Through character creation, improvisation, storytelling, collaborative role-playing, and exploring vocal range, D&D offers a unique and enjoyable way to enhance your voice over skills.
Embrace the world of tabletop role-playing games as a training ground for voice acting. Let the adventures unfold as you level up your abilities and bring captivating characters and narratives to life with your voice.
Also, We love voice over and Dungeons and Dragons
