The Essential Components of Effective Weekly Website Maintenance
Maintaining a website is a continuous process that requires regular attention and care. For some, this topic is a total snooze fest – I get it. But, just like any other asset, websites need routine maintenance to ensure they remain secure, optimized, and provide an exceptional user experience. The last thing you want is your customers to have user issues. That’s the quickest way to lose trust and a sale. In this blog post, we will explore the key components that should go into an effective weekly website maintenance routine, helping you keep your online presence running smoothly.
Hey, what’s up, I’m Ashley Poplin. My husband, Alex, and I decided that we were tired of living in the societal matrix. We completely started over by quitting our jobs and moving to our dream location in the beautiful mountains of North Georgia. Now, we pursue knowledge and excellence in everything we do. Come along with us and enjoy our Poplin Pursuits.
Backups and Security:
Everyone has heard of a backup. Regular backups are crucial to safeguard your website against potential data loss or security breaches. Schedule weekly backups to ensure that in the event of any unforeseen issues, you can quickly restore your website to its previous state.
We use WordPress and made sure we had the jetpack plugin installed. It has analytics and is able to restore backups. Plus, you can schedule them daily so it’s never a task you have to do. Completely automated for when you need it.
Additionally, perform security checks and updates to keep your website protected from vulnerabilities, malware, and other potential threats. Keep your content management system (CMS), themes, and plugins up to date to address any known security vulnerabilities.
Content Review and Updates:
Reviewing and updating your website’s content on a regular basis is essential for keeping it fresh, relevant, and engaging for your audience. In my ten years of marketing experience, I would update my website quarterly and do a total refresh once a year.
This isn’t a complete redo of the site. It’s a formula that I came up with that would make sure we were on top of industry trends, our copy still had the same meaning, and our services were up to date.
What you’re going to do is check for outdated information, broken links, and grammatical errors. Update product descriptions, blog posts, and landing pages to reflect any changes in your offerings or industry trends. Regularly refreshing your content not only improves user experience but also helps boost your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts. Especially if you’re adding more relevant pages.
Performance Optimization:
Website speed and performance play a significant role in user satisfaction and search engine rankings. Conduct regular performance audits using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix to identify and resolve issues affecting your website’s loading speed.
Optimize images, minify CSS and JavaScript files, and leverage browser caching to improve overall performance. Oh my gosh this is so important. I had a client that housed all her photos in her media on her site. She would upload images that were like 3500X3500 pixels and then would edit them down. But she’d leave the large files on her site. Not good.
Regularly monitoring and optimizing your website’s performance ensures a smooth and seamless user experience, reducing bounce rates and improving conversion rates. You want your bounce rate to be under 40%. Especially if you have an ecommerce storefront.
Broken Link Checks:
Broken links can harm your website’s credibility, user experience, and SEO rankings. Really though, they’re just annoying for your client. Especially when you have great copy. You build up this idea, they’re sold on it ready to learn more or even purchase, then BOOM! 404 error. They’ll usually click off and not come back – lost sale.
Regularly scan your website for broken links and fix them promptly. Utilize tools like Broken Link Checker or Screaming Frog to identify broken links and update or redirect them as necessary.
This isn’t a huge deal, but if you have too many it can affect your search engine rankings.
User Experience Enhancements:
We touched on this a bit in the review section, but a positive user experience is key to keeping visitors engaged and converting them into customers. Regularly evaluate your website’s usability by testing navigation, forms, and functionality across different devices and browsers.
When I worked for a digital marketing agency this was one of my jobs. I would go to each clients’ site and fill out on every form to make sure they were working. Tedious, but 7 times out of 10 they were working. And when those three times they weren’t we caught it and fixed the issue.
Address any user experience issues promptly, ensuring intuitive navigation, clear calls to action, and mobile responsiveness.
SEO Monitoring:
This is often the one that I get asked about the most. Everyone knows about SEO but not a lot of people can put it into words what it is. I can tell you it’s an easy way to go down that analysis blackhole.
Maintaining strong search engine visibility is vital for driving organic traffic to your website, yes, but your message is more important. SO, I say the next tip with the note that you need to focus on what you say before you focus on your SEO analytics.
Regularly monitor your website’s SEO performance by tracking keyword rankings, analyzing organic traffic, and identifying areas for optimization. Update metadata, optimize heading tags, and improve internal linking to enhance your website’s SEO. Stay updated with the latest SEO best practices to ensure your website remains visible and competitive in search engine results. There are a ton of resources like Yoast SEO and SEMRush that can help you.
Wrap Up:
They’re so much we can say – each section could be its own blog post, however, I hope this gives you an idea of some effective weekly website maintenance tips. Consistent website maintenance is essential for ensuring optimal performance, security, and user experience. By incorporating weekly maintenance tasks into your routine, such as performing backups, ensuring security, updating content, optimizing performance, checking for broken links, enhancing user experience, and monitoring SEO, you can keep your website running smoothly and effectively. Regular maintenance not only helps you address potential issues promptly but also ensures that your website continues to meet the expectations of your audience, driving engagement, conversions, and overall success.
